Ski Experience
Although Mayrhofen is at a modest of 630m (2067ft) most of the slopes are between 1,650m (5413ft) and 2,500m (8202ft), which means they’re relatively snow-sure throughout a long season. The main ski area is on the Penken mountain with the ski resorts of Finkenberg, Rastkogel and Eggalm. Advanced skiers might dare the challenging Harakiri Piste with its 78 per cent gradient. It is Austria’s steepest ski slope.
Beginners and families enjoy perfectly groomed nursery pistes at mount Ahorn, a separate area to Penken. The sunny slopes around the Ahorn Plateau ensure ideal carving conditions for beginners, families, and leisurely skiers alike. Many resorts have beginner slopes near the village, where the snow gets pulpy during the day but in Mayrhofen beginners have to ride up the mountain to reach the nursery runs and they have to ride down again at the end of the day which means they learn on good, higher-altitude snow and can enjoy the advantage of cruising down the diverse and pleasantly steep downhill valley run to Mayrhofen.
The Mayrhofen resort offers great days on the mountain including perfect snow, sunshine, cosy atmosphere in a hut and aprés-ski to finish. Take a break and chill out in one of the cozy deck chairs at the White Lounge, the original Igloo Hotel on Leisure Mount Ahorn.
Skiing Experience
Obergurgl- Hochgurgl are one of Europe’s highest ski villages with a peaceful, welcoming ambience. Obergurgl is at 1,930m its hamlet Hochgurgl, at 2,150m. The ski region is known as Austria’s most snowsure non-glacial resort and its long ski season from November to May. It is at the southern end of the Ötz-Valley and offers a wide variety of slopes of every level of difficulty: 24 mountain lifts and 110 kilometers of immaculate ski slopes (35 km easy (blue) ski runs, 55 km intermediate (red) ski runs and 20 km difficult (black) ski runs. The skiing and lifts start directly from the village. And as Obergurgl is relatively small, with lifts at either end, it’s quick and easy to get up the mountain.
Obergurgl’s scenic ski runs are popular with beginner and intermediate skiers. Hochgurgl, with its steeper, more challenging runs, is just a short gondola ride away. Off-piste opportunities are excellent, and in the late spring, the resort is a major destination for ski touring especially those along the Italian frontier.
Compared to other resorts Obergurgl- Hochgurgl is a much smaller skiing area. But people come here for the overall experience of friendly villages and intermediate slopes that are equally snowsure in December and April.
Family and child friendly
Children up to 8 years old can ski for free with their parents and the wide slopes are very suitable for families. Little ski guests enjoy the fun slope in Hochgurgl and the wild animal safari Zauberwald in Obergurgl. Once they are a bit more secure on their skis, they can explore the easy slopes at the Krumpwasser lift.
