Ski Trip to Kitzbühel
Ski Experience
Kitzbühel is situated between the mountains Hahnenkamm (1712 m, 5616ft,) and Kitzbühler Horn (1996 m, 6548ft,). The Resort offers 170km (105m) of perfectly groomed and waymarked slopes with varying degrees of difficulty and 32 km (20m) of ski trails. The variety of terrain will please most skiers and boarders, particularly those with intermediate to advanced skills. The resort includes the nearby villages of Kirchberg and Jochberg, as well as a separate area, the Kitzbüheler Horn. Not to forget 56 ski huts and lodges ranging from frugal simplicity to full-on dining.
Kitzbühel attracts a lot of ski experts as the resort contains a number of black slopes and several unpisted runs which are way-marked descents away from the pistes network. Nevertheless, the majority of the slopes are very well suited to intermediates.
The visual sights of the alps are impressive but the resort’s low base altitude at 760m (2500ft) is a concern in respect of the reliability of snow conditions. However, snowmaking equipment covers the key problem areas on the lower to mid-altitude slopes and the lowest pistes are situated on grass-based slopes, which don’t require much depth of snow to be viable.
If you are a beginner or your children are about to learn skiing you should know that the use of all the practice lifts in the Kitzbühel valley is free. This is a wonderful opportunity even for those who have not skied for a while.
The legendary Streif
The Streif is the most spectacular downhill ski race track in the world. The name Streif comes from the the meadow “Streifalm” on the upper part of the course. It is the ultimate challenge because of the diversity of its terrain. Every year in January the best ski athletes in the world will gather in Kitzbuehel to race 3.312km (2.06mi) at more than average speed of 103 km/h (64 mph).
The Streif is feasable by most intermediate skiers. Some parts of it such as the “Mausefalle”, “Steilhang” and “Hausbergkante”, are marked as “extreme ski routes” and should be for expert skiers only.
